Country & Coastal Touring

Safari Tours are the Most Popular

Lions at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve

Over the last 10 years or so I’ve been keeping track as to which tours are the most popular. I’ve also categorized the tours into 1 day tours, overnight tours and the 3 day tours to again try and judge just what people prefer. And I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that wildlife viewing tours are the most popular, by a long long way!

Safari Tours from Durban

Durban is located in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, on the east coast of South Africa. It’s easily accesible thanks to the King Shaka International Airport which is only 20 min north of Durban itself. The city of Durban has always been considered to be South Africa’s playground because of it’s beautiful weather (well at least 300 days of the year or so), the warm Indian ocean and the vibrant and welcoming people.

Another reason for Durban’s fortunes is that there are fantastic game reserve’s within a few hours drive of the city. Visitors can spend time at Tala Game Reserve (45 min from Durban), Shongweni Reserve (30 min west of Durban), Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve (2,5 hours from Durban), iSimangaliso (2,5 hours north of Durban) as well as places like Ithala Game Reserve, Mkuze, Lions Valley and so many more.

Game Reserve and Nature Reserves

And (as the TV adverts always say) that’s not all! I’ve left out the many nature reserves that dot around the city that have prolific wildlife and in some cases some antelope such as Zebra, Giraffe, Nyala and Bushbuck. Reserves that come to mind are Stainbank, Cresthome, Krantzview, Isithumba, Shongweni, Paradise Valley, Green Corridor Mongroves… all of these places are just minutes from Durban.

It’s no wonder at all then that safari and wildlife tours are so popular for visitors to Durban, there’s just so many places for people to get in touch with nature – oh and I forgot to add the marine areas where visitors to see shark, dolphins, whales, turtles and unique sea birds!

Cultural Tours

Next up in terms of popularity are cultural tours. The name “King Shaka” is known to almost everyone that visits, and of course with KwaZulu-Natal being home to the Zulu people, it’s no wonder that people are curious about the Zulu’s. Tours to townships and rural areas as well as places like PheZulu and Shakaland are the 2nd most popular tours booked with us.

History Tours

The tours booked least with us is the history tours. I find that those that want to visit the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift, or Ulundi or any of the other historic sites tend fall into two camps, those that have some connection to the events, either in the form of long lost relations being directly involved or perhaps being military personnel themselves, and the the mildly curious who maybe watched Zulu or Zulu Dawn.

Visiting the Best Part of South Africa

What ever floats your boat, KwaZulu-Natal and Durban is without doubt the best place in the country to get a taste of South AFrica in one unique province. So get in touch today and let’s start planning your next vacation.
