Tala Game Reserve Overnight Tour
Tala game reserve is situated just 45min west of Durban, and is a firm favorite among local Durban’ites to spend a bit of time in the African veld (bush). The game reserve has a host of antelope, including Eland and Kudu. There are also Giraffe, Wildebeest (Gnu) Zebra, Blesbok and a host of others. Also featured on Tala’s “tick list” are hippo! Visitors to Tala are able to enjoy not only an open vehicle game drive, but are able to also enjoy guided bush walks.
Included in this tour is a visit to the Isithumba, an authentic rural Zulu village situated in the heart of the Valley of 1000 Hills. Isithumba is the home to the Debi clan of the Zulu people. Situated in the heart of the Valley of 1000 Hills, the Zulu people of Isithumba still practice a very traditional way of life in the area. On the tour which is conducted by a local guide, visitors have the opportunity to meet a Sangoma (traditional healer) as well as the headman of the village.
We’ve also include on this tour, an opportunity to meet two organisations that have been instrumental in assisting the very poor people of the Valley of 1000 Hills. We’ll visit both Embocraft in Bothas Hill as well as the Hillcrest AIDS center; both are popular destinations on our tour and do much to help visitors understand the daily struggles that many South Africans still experience today.
This tour is an overnight tour, consisting of 1 night and 2 days. We will collect you from the airport or from your accommodation anywhere in the greater Durban area and be your guides for the two days.
We leave Durban at 8:30am and travel towards the Valley of 1000 Hills. Along the way your guide will chat to you about the history of Durban as well as point out interesting sites along the way. The drive to our first destination, Isithumba is about 60min. On arrival at Isithumba, we’ll be met by a local guide form the Zulu village and be taken on a tour of the Isithumba village.
After the tour, it’s time for lunch. We’ll be stopping at one of the popular local restaurants for lunch, with absolutely breathtaking views of the Valley of 1000 Hills. Your guide will be with you and be able to answer any questions you may still have.
After lunch we travel a short 30 min to the Tala Game Reserve. On entering we’ll first check you into your accommodation and then take you on a late afternoon game drive on the look out for Giraffe, Hippo, Eland and other animals. After the game drive it’s time for dinner and finally bed.
On day 2 you have the option of either a game walk or a game drive. We’ll explore the park and be on the look out for any of the animals we missed the day before. After the morning out, it’s back for breakfast before our final game drive.
On leaving Tala, we head back to Durban, stopping along the way at a few sites, include some not-for-profit organisations that work with the rural Zulu people in the Valley of 1000 Hills. Finally, we drop you off at your accommodation after satisfying 2 days!
