Durban Day Tour
Today started with a pickup of clients from an Umhlanga hotel, and what a beautiful day it turned out to be! With the temperature at around 27 Celsius and brilliant blue skies, it definitely wasn’t a day to be indoors.
Our first stop was Moses Mabhida stadium where my clients enjoyed firstly the furnicular car ride to the top of the arches over the stadium, and then a tour of the stadium itself.
Moses Mabhida was the General Secretary of the Communist Party having been elected in November 1979. Mabhida was also a member of the ANC National Executive Committee. Mabhida suffered a stroke in 1985 while in Havana and after a year of illness died of a heart attack in Maputo where he was also buried in March 1986.
Built on the old grounds of the Kings Park Soccer Stadium, Moses Mabhida stadium was built as one of the host stadiums during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium is designed to be multi-use. The stadium is characterised by an arch that was inspired by the South African flag, representing a once-divided nation coming together.
From the stadium we went to Victoria street market, which used to be the Grey street market, but more about that later.
