Durban City Day Tour

I collected my guests from the cruise ship Nautica on Sunday and started off on a Durban City Day Tour. Being that it was Sunday, and the holiday season, I wasn’t expecting too many of the usual sites to be open but at the end of the day, quite a few were actually open.

We started the tour off by heading along Margaret Mncadi Avenue (Margaret was the first president of the ANC Woman’s league ) stopping the Vasco De Gama Clock and then Dick King’s statue before heading into Wilsons Wharf.

Next up was Durban City Hall which is always a pleasure to visit. Two interesting facts about the City Hall. Firstly the design submitted by Stanley Hudson was inspired by the Belfast City Hall in Ireland and was remarked upon by the Durban Fathers as being a “bold & progressive” design.

The second interesting fact is that the Durban City Hall is the first public building to depict a Black person on the facade!

Our next stop was the Victoria Street Market which I’m told opened especially in order to accommodate visitors from the cruise ship (really good of them!). Being a Sunday and all, it was far quieter than I’ve ever seen, there were a few shops that chose not too open but still, a great shopping experience.

Moses Mabhida Stadium

Our next stop was the Moses Mabhida Stadium for a ride up the arches in the funicular car. The stadium itself was built for the 2010 world cup and today hosts a number of international shows and sporting events.

A highlight of a visit to the stadium is a ride up the arches of the Stadium in the funicular car (finishing 106 meters off the ground) for the amazing views of Durban. Unfortunately for us the queue when we arrived was particularly long so we decided to skip this and move onto lunch.

After a drive along the Golden Mile (Durban’s famous beachfront) we arrived at uShaka Marine World and strolled through the busy center until we came across a Spur. Lunch was great and enjoyed by all (we built up quite an appetite on the tour!).

Lunch finished we did a bit of shopping and headed off back to the ship. However, my guests asked if they could do a bit more shopping so I took them to Florida Road and there they made some great purchases.

This done, it was time to head back to the ship. We had a great tour and I think everyone enjoyed their visit to Durban.
