Visitors to Durban are often looking for day trips to do in and around Durban. One of the more popular day trips we offer at Country and Coastal Touring, is a guided tour to Tala Game Reserve and PheZulu Safari Park, both of which can be visited in one day and give visitors both a wildlife experience and cultural experience. That’s a two for one deal!
Wildlife and Cultural Day Tour Around Durban
I collected my clients from the Hilton Hotel and we started on the 60min journey west to Tala Game Reserve. Along the way we chatted about the history of Durban, the Zulu people and of course South Africa. My guests were from Poland and although they had taken a city tour the day before, were eager to learn more.
Tala Game Reserve Day Tour
We arrived at Tala Game Reserve and immediately got some great wildlife sightings. Tala has rhino, hippo, giraffe and many other species of animals. We also had some of the most enjoyable bird sightings I’ve seen in a long time at Tala!
We spent about 3 hours in Tala, and the only animal that we really had trouble finding was the giraffe! You would expect giraffe to be pretty easy to spot with their very distinctive long necks but honestly sometimes they can be pretty tricky.
Fortunately I spotted movement way out in the hills and after a quick scan with the binoculars announced we had found the giraffe! So we headed on over and had a great experience with a large male walking over to inspect us as we watched him; as you can imagine, lots of selfies taken.
PheZulu Safari Park
We departed Tala with everyone really thrilled about the mornings sightings and we continued onto PheZulu Safari Park. I had hoped to stop for lunch along the way at one of my favorite lunchtime spots, Intaba View, but the place was really busy and we were pushed for time a bit.
We arrived at PheZulu Safari Park and after lunch at the very enjoyable Boma Restaurant we enjoyed a fantastic 30 minute Zulu dance show. PheZulu Safari Park have been wowing visitors for something like 30 years, and the dancers are all one big family; it’s always good fun to watch.
Crocodile and Reptile Park
Finally we entered the last site of the day, the crocodile and reptile park at PheZulu. Here my guests were shown around the crocodile enclosures where not only did they learn a great deal about these ferocious reptiles, but also got to hold a juvenile crocodile!
After this we got a tour of the common and not-so-common snakes found in the South Africa as well as some interesting bugs and spiders. A great day for my visitors in Durban.
