I collected my guests from the cruise ship Nautica on Sunday and started off on a Durban City Day Tour. Being that it was Sunday, and the holiday season, I wasn’t expecting too many of the usual sites to be open but at the end of the day, quite a few were actually open.

On a very wet and dark day, I picked up my group of 5 clients and we headed into Durban City for a short tour, before we made our way to the Valley of 1000 Hills.

Every now and again I get a call from visitors to our fabulous city about what there is to do in a day. I also get the same call from friends who had lived in the city their entire lives (shame on you!). So I’ve decided to to finally get round to posting what I’m hoping will be the “ultimate list of awesome things to do in Durban in a day!“.
Durban’s “Golden Mile”
Not too many people are aware that Durban has the largest concentration of Indian people outside of India! Originally brought in during the 1860’s by the British as indentured workers for the sugar cane plantations, many chose to remain after their 4 year contracts had ended and brought their families over from India to Durban and started their new lives as store owners and artisans.

I don’t often get to tour Durban much these days, it seems most of the visitors to our shores are keen to get straight into the bush to track down the “Big-5”. So this week I was pleased to be able to spend a little time in the city, from Umhlanga to Pietermaritzberg as well as Durban central. To me, Durban is one of the the most vibrant city’s in the country, whether just chilling out on the beach watching the surfers, or haggling over items at the Victoria Market, Durban is fun, friendly and exciting.

Today started with a pickup of clients from an Umhlanga hotel, and what a beautiful day it turned out to be! With the temperature at around 27 Celsius and brilliant blue skies, it definitely wasn’t a day to be indoors.
