It’s really great that more and more travelers are exploring destinations like Durban that are probably not as well known as others in South Africa. I recently had a group of students from Canada who booked a 4 day safari tour to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve as well as St Lucia. From their comments at the end (and during) the tour they had a great time and could even one day return again with their families.
Most people coming out to South Africa are on their way to the Kruger National Park and Cape Town, and that’s great, both places are fantastic to visit. Few though, know about how amazing Durban can be, and fewer still know about the great many opportunities there are around Durban to get out and enjoy a Durban Safari tour.
A Durban safari to St Lucia estuary is an absolute must when visiting South Africa and Durban in particular. Where else in the country would you find Hippo strolling along a small town’s main street? Or even a Nile Crocodile crossing a road. St Lucia is home to one of the largest (if not the largest) populations of Hippo and Crocodile in one spot and, is situated in the countries 3rd largest game reserve.
St Lucia is situated about 2,5 hours north of Durban, and is not only one of the best places to view hippo and crocodile, but is also home to the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park where an astounding number of bird species are able to be found. It’s no wonder then when Read more…
Way back in 1824 Francis Farewell, one of the original settlers to Durban, landed off what is today the town of St.Lucia, some 200km’s north of Durban. His intention was to land at Durban (or rather Port Natal as it was then known) but obviously an error was made and here Read more…
The weather was perfect for a tour of the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve over the Easter weekend. I started off early on Friday morning to pick up my guest Olivia and her two children Thomas and Josie (aged 7 & 5). After collecting them from Durban North, we headed straight for Emdoneni Cat Rehabilitation Center.
It’s quite amazing to think that in just 2 hours drive, visitors to Durban can go from the hustle and chaos of a bustling city to the peace and quiet of a “Big-5” gamer reserve! I had two guests joining me on an overnight tour of the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, Emdoneni and St.Lucia estuary.
After picking up my two guests early on Sunday morning, we headed out straight to the Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Game Reserve where we were staying overnight. The two days spent there were fantastic, the weather was hot, the sky was blue and the animals obliging (mostly!).
