We had a really early start to the day, leaving Durban at about 5:30am to meet our guests off their ship in Richards Bay at 7:30am for their tour to Shakaland. Turns out we arrived a little early, which was fortunate since the ship also was early, so we were on the road already at 7:15am!

Shakaland Tour

The show at Shakaland was only scheduled to start at 11am, which meant that with the early 7:15am collection of our guests, we would have quite a bit of time to kill. So instead of wasting it sitting about waiting around, I decided to give my guests a real treat, and I took them to Dlinza Forest in Eshowe.

Dlinza Forest

Dlinza Forest is actually only 1 of 5 natural forest in KwaZulu-Natal, running in a 100km line west of the coastline; it’s a place or serenity and peace. I arranged for a local guide to be on hand and he chatted to my guests about the importance of Dlinza Forest to the local people, as well a bit of local Zulu history. Everyone enjoyed this immensely.

We left the coolness of the Dlinza Forest and headed out for the Shakaland Tour. On arrival we had a quick cuppa, before being introduced to our guide at Shakaland for the duration of the show. Guests were lead through a large Zulu village and the local guide kept us entertained with the tour of the village.

Zulu Dance

A quick lunch was then in order, with a wonderful buffet spread presented, after which it was time for the frenetic Zulu dance (one of the best in South Africa in my opinion). The temperature by this stage was well into the 30’s (degrees celcius), so once the show was over, the coolness of the air-conditioned coach was welcomed by everyone on our return trip to the ship at Richards Bay.
