Many of Durban’s visitors are in the city because of work commitments. They may be visiting because of a conference, or be employed on a contract basis, or even be in Durban to study. The two clients I collected early one morning were here because of the latter; they were working on their studies at the local university. The girls only had a weekend available so on a saturday morning we headed north to Zululand.
Safari Day Tour Around Durban to Big 5 Game Reserve
Our trip up to the park was great. One of the girls was originally from Zimbabwe so we had a some interesting conversation comparing South Africa and Zimbabwe; it seems both countries do face very similar challenges!
We arrived at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Big 5 Game Reserve a little earlier than anticipated which was perfect as the day was shaping up to be a good one. On a previous trip a day or two before I had spotted lion some distance in the park and decided to first have a look and see if they were still around.
Lion at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
As luck would have, the lion were still in the same spot as before! After some time chatting about the lion we left them to enjoy their morning and continued on our way. One of the girls had mentioned to me how “elephant” was sort of the families totem animal, so I was keen to get some good views of these animals.
Elephant at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
We were lucky with elephant on two occasions. On the first we came across a young bull elephant enjoying a muddy hole by himself. We parked nearby and enjoyed the spectacle until he noticed us and came over to inspect us. I will admit I held my breath a bit as he approached the vehicle, as young as he was he still easily dwarfed us!
On the second occasion we were leaving the park when we came across an entire herd of elephant. I parked alongside an animal pathway and we all got to enjoy the elephants walking past us onto the pathway. It pays to know animal behavior as other vehicles had made u-turns because they simply associated the animals as being a danger at that point. Fact is they were more interested in an afternoon graze than us at that point.
Birding in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
There are always animals that visitors want to see, rhino, elephant, lion etc, so it was a nice change of ace when one of the girls mentioned how they were new into birding. We had great sightings of a number of species of birds, including a Yellow Billed Kite which to me always announces the summer is back with the returned presence.
Finally, after a bit of curio shopping at the gate, we were all good to head back to Durban after what I believe was a very successful excursions to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve from Durban. We had spotted the 4 of the big5 and a large number of other game including bushbuck and waterbuck, not too mention butterflies and birds.
