It’s been quite a while since we last conducted a tour to Shakaland, I’m not sure why this is since Shakaland is a fantastic place to visit and experience Zulu culture when visiting Durban, South Africa. We collected out guests from their accommodation in Umhlanga which is about 15 min north of Durban and we all headed off on our private day tour to Shakaland.
Private Day to Shakaland from Durban
Shakaland is situated just 10 min or so north of Eshowe and takes about 90 min to get to from Durban. The drive to Shakaland also goes through not only beautiful country side with the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal keeping visitors company, but also goes past some very important historical sites.
On our way to Shakaland we pass KwaDukuza, the site at which King Shaka was assassinated and still lies today; the Ultimatum Tree, Fort Person and Fort Tenedos, as well as the Battle of Ndondakusuka, the Battle of Gingindlovu, Battle of Nyzane, KwaMondi, KwaBulawayo, the resting place of Nandi and so much more.
On arrival at Shakaland we’re greeted by the friendly staff dressed in period correct Zulu traditional wear. After a refreshing drink at the bar, visitors are then led on a tour of a traditional umuzi (homestead).
This umuzi was originally created for a TV series called Shaka Zulu. After production had ended the village was then used as a site for visitors to learn more about traditional Zulu culture and life.
After the tour ends my favorite part starts and this is a 30 min Zulu dance. To be honest, as a tour guide I have watched many different dances at many different cultural centers around the country. And bar none, this is without doubt the best of the lot.
The energy that the dancers put into the show is palpable! And not only are Zulu dances displayed, but dances from other indigenous groups are also put on! It’s amazing and something every visitors to KwaZulu-Natal and Durban should experience.
Finally it’s time for lunch and it’s a great spread that Shakaland put on for visitors. From staple dishes such as stews and roasts, to local favorites such as curries, pap and chakalacka.
Finally it’s back to Durban where to be frank, most people fall asleep in the vehicles; as my grandmother would say “magies vol, oe toe” (stomachs full and eyes close!).
