We’ve been so fortunate to be busy over the last few months, so much so that just finding the time to update the blog can be a little difficult. I had only just finished my recent overnight safari tour to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve when I got a last minute request to conduct another overnight tour. Of course I said yes right away since I love to show off KZN, and so with a pretty quick turn around, I picked up my clients from their Umhlanga Protea Hotel and we headed off on our overnight safari tour from Durban.
Overnight Safari Tour from Durban
We had a great two days in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. In the very short time we were there my clients got to enjoy herds of Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo and so much more. We even got to see Lion relaxing in a dry river bed!
The only disappointment the entire weekend was that I forgot my camera on my desk back home; very annoying! The birding over the last week has been just phenomenal and I could have really worked my camera out!
Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve has been around since 1895, making it the oldest proclaimed game park in Africa. In fact, the reserve has been around since King Shaka’s day when it was declared off limit to hunters without the King’s specific permission. One can still see today evidence of the great hunting pits of the Zulu people where periodically Shaka gave permission for the great hunts.
Further north there remains even evidence of the sites where the iron blades of the Zulu assagays were mined and then worked into the “iklwa” that the Zulu’s used to great effect in their military campaigns.
My guests enjoyed their initial game drive into the park with me, and we were well blessed. We saw two of the big 5 barely 10 minutes into the park; Buffalo and Rhino. But the park is not only about the Big 5, there’s so much more, we spotted so many antelope, and quite a few interesting bugs, one of which, the Dung Beetle, obligingly flew in through my open window and onto my hand, allowing my guests to get some great photos!
My clients first night in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve was fantastic, there is something very magical about the evening game drives, when the moon is full there is actually quite a lot of light and one can still make out animals. Of course the sounds seems so much more intense, and the stars are a sight that just can’t be explained.
