The Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve is the oldest proclaimed game park in Africa, and being just 250km’s or so from Durban, means it’s within reach of a day tour! The park itself boasts some 960km2 of natural African veld and counts the “Big-5” among it’s varied residents. The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is perfect for a full day game reserve tour from Durban.

I collected my guest, a solo traveler in Durban on business from his hotel in Umhlanga and we headed north along the N2 at 6:30am. Generally speaking, the best times for viewing game are early mornings and late afternoons, but having said that I’ve had fantastic sightings over the heat of the day as well.
We arrived at Nyalazi gate at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve at about 9:30am, having stopped along the way for some coffee and an opportunity for me to the fill the vehicle up. We entered the park and right away we struck gold, with an Elephant munching contently on some foliage below us!
Giraffe are always a welcome sight
The rest of the day followed suit, with loads of fantastic sightings. What makes this so special is the fact that the animals are in their natural habitat; that they’re not staring back at you through a chain link fence. I honestly feel that even if we don’t see animals, just the fact we’re out in this magnificent preserved space should be good enough.
But we do want to see animals as well! And we weren’t disappointed! From Rhino to Elephant, and Buffalo to Warthog, we had a fantastic day. Finally though, the day came to an end and left for Durban, arriving at about 8pm, tired but satisfied.
