Every year in South Africa, a race called “The Comrades Marathon” is held. This race is pretty well known world wide, at least in running circles. And so we get runners from around the world participating. Now South Africa is a very long way from anywhere, so when international runners do make the journey, it seems a huge waste if after the race they don’t do a safari! So a very last minute booking by two Colombian runners had us headed out on a Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban.
A Durban Big 5 Safari Day Tour
There are a few smaller games reserves that are dotted around Durban, Tala Game Reserve is one that is quite popular. But Tala Game Reserve doesn’t have the Big 5 and so most visitors are more than willing to make the 3 hour journey north for the possibility of seeing the Big 5.
A tour started at 6:30am and by 9:30 am we were in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. And not 10 minutes later we had come across the first of the Big 5, a bull Elephant that was contently grazing along a dry river bed.
We Saw 4 of the Big 5 Animals!
From this sighting things just got better, with Lion, Rhino, Buffalo and more Elephant being spotted. The only animal of the Big 5 we didn’t see was Leopard. We did have a momentary glimpse of a Spotted Hyena moving across the road so that was something new as well.
Of course we also saw many antelope and the bird life was great as usual. At the end of the day my Colombian guests were thrilled with their day in the bush and both vowed to return one day with their families.
