Visiting game reserve in (or outside) South Africa is always an amazing experience even for those like myself who enjoy safaris on almost a weekly basis as a safari guide! And over the years I’ve come to realise (I admit I’m a slow learner) that it’s not only the experience of seeing animals that people remember, but also about who is on safari with you and what you’re doing an safari that also counts.
Traditional South Africa Braai
For those that don’t know, a “braai” is the South African vernacular for a barbecue. It comes from the Afrikaans word, “braaivleis” which simply means to burn/cook/grill meat. Here in South Africa we take our braai’ing seriously, so much so we even have a cooking show about it (The Ultimate Braaimaster) we also have a national holiday called “Braai Day”
We now offer a day tour that makes the most of both experience, a braai and a safari tour. That’s right, you get to enjoy a safari tours of one of South Africa’s best game reserves, the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, and we’ll prepare a braai at a picnic spot in the game reserve!
How does it work?
We’ll collect you from your accommodation in the Durban or surrounding area and whisk you 3 hours north to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. One the way your guide will chat to you about the history of Durban, the Zulu people and of course point out sites of interest along the way.
When we get to the park you’ll transfer into an open vehicle and spend the next few hours with your very own private guide in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. You’ll get to spend the next 6 hours (give or take) exploring the game reserve and learning more about make this place so special.
Around lunch time your guide will find a nice picnic site and get started on a fire while you and your companions relax and just enjoy the sights and sounds of the African veld. When lunch is ready you’ll get to tuck into a hearty South African lunch (we do accommodate vegetarians).
After lunch you’ll spend a few more hours watching animals before it’s finally time to leave the park and head back to Durban.
