Things have been hectic around here, so posting about recent tours hasn’t been regular. I do have to write about a 2-night/3-day Durban safari tour I recently did with 2 pretty cool New Zealanders. Even though I spend A LOT of time at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, you’d think I’d have seen all there was to see, but this tour was incredible!

Giant Kingfisher at St.Lucia

Giant Kingfisher

We started things a little backwards this time around, heading for St.Lucia for the 2 hour cruise first, before heading to Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. The weather Gods were kind to us and kept the rain away (it rained heavily later on) and we had some excellent sightings; I even managed to take a pic of St.Lucia’s “Big-3”, African Fish Eagle, Hippo and Nile Crocodile, all in one frame!

Hilltop Camp

After the cruise, we headed direct for Hilltop Camp in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. We entered in at Nyalazi Gate and headed first to Centenery Center for lunch and then got caught in some major bad weather!

The following day we headed out early with the intention of going as far south into Imfolozi as we could, I was determined to find some Elephant and Lion. The day started out pretty well with good weather, but on our way back the heavens opened and the rain started in earnest!

There were a few nervous moments where I had to cross small water courses and I could actually feel the water pressure on the vehicle driving through! We were also hampered by a section of road that was totally flooded over, which meant for about 25 min we weren’t going anywhere!

Finally the water subsided enough for us to cross. It was still fairly early in the afternoon, and so we decided to take a chance with the weather and head back into the bush. And lucky we did because we were rewarded with a small pride of Lion not 2m from the road! We spent some time there before finally heading back to Hilltop Camp for a much deserved dinner and bed!

Elephant Herd in the Early Morning at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve

Elephant Herd in the Early Morning

Our final day saw us out on an early morning game drive looking for Elephant, of which there were plenty the day before; but naturally this morning not a trunk was seen anywhere. There was loads of sign that they were about, but because of the heavy rain, they had probably wondered off into the thick forests.

It was finally time to leave the park and start making our way back to Durban. We stopped at Emdoneni to enjoy a short tour of the facilities and get our pictures taken with the resident cats; including a Cheetah named Moyo who, with a startling large paw casually swatted a nearby child (lots of tears at that!).

All in all I had a fantastic 3 days, the weather not withstanding, and am waiting quite impatiently for the next tour!
