I got a phone call on Friday night from a colleague asking if I could assist with a day tour the following day. As soon as I heard the destination, I was not going to say ‘no’ and so a Durban Day Safari was planned to Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve the following day.
Durban Day Safari
I collected my two guests from their lodge in Umhlanga at 6:30am and we got straight on the road. It’s a 2,5 hour drive from Durban to the Hluhlwue Imfolozi Game Reserve so an early start is always best. Our drive to the park was really fun, with both my guests was really interested in South Africa and so there was lots of laughter and discussion to help the hours roll by.
Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is a big place, 960 square kilometers in fact! So it stands to reason that you can’t expect to see all the animals in the park in a few hours. Well for us, the day was a good one, and although we didn’t see the cats, we saw loads of other animals.
Giraffe and Baboon
We first headed down to the southern part of the game reserve. I had heard rumor of great Lion sightings in the early morning so decided to try our luck. Unfortunately the Lion kept themselves hidden from us, but we did get to see Chacma Baboon, Wildebeest, Warthog, Impala as well as Zebra, Kudu, Vervet Monkey and Eland; this all before lunch!
As luck would have it, the batteries on my camera died, leaving me a little lost as usually I’m snapping away. So this time I had to be content with just taking it all in, so all these photo’s are from previous tours.
Elephant and Rhino
We decided to head in for lunch, then chance our luck in the northern section of the park, so we headed to the Hluhluwe section. This proved to be a great decision because we came across loads of Elephant, at seemed that no matter where we looked, Elephant looked back! We also got stuck for a little while behind a Journey of Giraffe as they meandered their way along the road.
To make matters even more interesting, in the same spot not more than 5 meters away were 3 White Rhino grazing contently in the long grass!
Finally though, our day had to come to an end and we headed back to Durban. Again the kilometers were just eaten up as we all chatted about the day we had. It was one of the tours that I just thoroughly enjoyed.
