This past weekend I had another opportunity to show some visitors to Durban why the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve has to be one of the best parks to visit in the country! We started our Big 5 privates overnight safari on Saturday morning at 7am and headed to our first stop some 2,5 hours away, Emdoneni Cheetah Project.

The Emdoneni Cheetah Project was started when one of the owners was given 3 Cheetah kittens. Word quickly spread and farmers in the area started bringing injured, sick or problem cats to Emdoneni… and the rest as they say is history!

The Cheetah project now homes Cheetah, Caracal, Serval and African Wild Cat. Though it must be said the African Wild Cat they have are no longer true African Wild Cat because of interbreeding between domestic and Wild Cat.

After the Emdoneni tour we departed for Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, entering into the northern gate of the park. Our initial intent was a very quick game drive, lunch at 1pm and then check in at 2pm. On this occasion our game sightings were so fantastic that at 2pm we were still watching Elephant!

After lunch at 2:30pm, my guests elected to rest up a bit and then join an open vehicle game drive that started at 5pm and finished at 8pm. Although they didn’t get to see any Cats, they had a fantastic time on the game drive, with real close Buffalo, Giraffe and Rhino sightings!

Early Morning Game Drives

Our 2nd and last day of the Durban Safari Big 5 Private Overnight Tour started nice and early with a game drive at 6am. Again no cats, but fantastic general game sightings; Elephants, Waterbuck, Nyala, Monkeys, a Chameleon, Vultures and a very inquisitive Warthog that I think would have climbed into the car had I let him!

St Lucia Estuary Cruise

We left the game reserve via the Nyalazi gate and chatted quite a bit as we travelled the 50min to St Lucia where my guests were booked on a 2 hour long cruise of the estuary. I didn’t go along with them but over lunch they told me what a great trip it had been, with very close up sightings of Hippo, Crocodile and birds.

Back to Durban

It’s always a bittersweet moment when it’s time to head back to the hotel. We chatted most of the way back, though after about 90min most of my guests were asleep; for them it had been quite a busy two days.
