Way back in 1826, a very young man by the name of Charles Rawden Maclean (known to most South Africans as “John Ross“) traveled with his Zulu companion Langalibalele some 600 km’s from the Durban settlement that was barely clinging to existence, to Delgoa Bay in order to purchase much needed medicines and supplies for the settlement.
After this awe-inspiring journey which featured uncharted territory swamps, crocodiles, hippo’s and more, Charles left the shores of South Africa and ended up in the Caribbean, specifically St.Lucia.
So what does this have to do with Hluhuwe or day trips out of Durban? Well my recent clients who I spent the day with in Hluhluwe, turned out to be from Trinidad! Yup, that’s the Caribbean connection!
Day Tours Out of Durban and Pietermaritzberg
I collected Hema and her family from Pietermaritzberg in the very early hours of Tuesday morning and we got onto the road direct for the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. We made pretty good time, even stopping twice along the way for coffee and snacks. Traffic on the road was really light and so we entered Nyalazi Gate at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve just on 10am.
Our first tick of the day was two Bull Elephant enjoying a snack some 30 meters away next to the Imfolozi river! From then on it got a bit quiet, but by mid-morning we had seen Impala, Warthog, Wildebeest and a lone Zebra that was posing for pictures inside Mpila Camp.
We headed down towards Sontuli on the advice of some passing motorists, but the loop was extremely quiet today. We did find one of the biggest “Golden Orb” spiders I’ve ever seen as well as the flash of a Steenbok. We headed back to Centenery for a late lunch and chanced on a White Rhino enjoying a nap in a mud hole, sharing the the mud hole was a humongous African Buffalo… the pair did look an odd sight!
Sontuli Loop in Imfolozi
After a much needed late (very) lunch and a quick browse at the curio shop, it was time to start our long journey back to Pietermaritzberg.
Although our tick list wasn’t quite as long as it has been on other game drives and tours, Hema remarked that just being out in KwaZulu-Natal’s wonderful wilderness and seeing the animals in their natural habitat was worth the long drive from Pietermaritzberg… and I agree!
