I think that most people from around the world would think of the Big-5 when asked about South Africa. We have so many game parks around the country, from the grand daddy Kruger National Park, to the smaller Hluhluwe Imfolozi, to the smaller still like Tala, Addo and 100’s of others. Of course not all parks are home to the Big 5, fortunately though, just 3 hours outside Durban, there’s a perfect spot for a Big 5 Safari Tours, the Hluhluwe Imfoloz Game Reserve.
Big-5 Safari Tours
I think it’s the first question I normally get on tours, “will we see the Big 5?”. The fact is, game reserves are not zoo’s. Game reserves are generally huge tracts of land, 1000’s of hactares large, with limited road systems. So while on one particular day the sightings may be fantastic, on others the animals may have decided to escape the paparazzi (yes, us ) for quieter sections. Very often luck plays the biggest role.
Over the last few tours, I have had fantastic luck, sighting 4 of the Big 5 almost every time but one, missing out only on the elusive Leopard (did spot one dashing across the road though). However the South African bush has so much more to offer, from the Dung Beetle and brililiant Agama, to Golden Orb Spiders (*shudder*) and Giant Earthworms, from the famed Africam Marula Tree to the Sausage tree, there’s so much to offer.
The most wonderful part of being in the African bush in my opinion, is just “being”; feeling the warmth of the African sun on the skin, a cooling breeze rustling hair and the sounds of life around, barking of Baboon, the high pitched snort of Zebra, the buzz of the busy insects darting about and the whisper of rustling tree leaves. It’s an African Zen of sorts.
To all visitors to our shores, those that allowed us to show them around of beautiful part of the world, to those that are yet to make the trip, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Wonderful and Happy New Year.
