The last few weeks have been extremely busy, with what seems like back to back tours around the beautiful province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. My blogs posts are definitely falling behind because of how busy I am (not complaining though) but I’m going to try catch over the next week. First up though, a recent Big 5 Safari tour from Durban to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve including a visit to Emdoneni and a cruise on the St.Lucia estuary.
Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban
Recently a small but important educational conference took place in Umhlanga and I was fortunate to have had delegates to the conference on tour with me both before and after the conference. I collected my guests after the conference from their hotel in Umhlanga at 7am (they were mostly on time) and we headed northwards to our first stop, Emdoneni.
King Shaka
Along the way to Emdoneni I chatted about the history of Durban and the Zulu’s, specifically on the life of King Shaka himself. All our knowledge about King Shaka comes to us thanks to the diaries of Henry Fynn and Nathaniel Isaacs as well as later historians and researchers. King Shaka is credited with the start of Zulu nation as we know it today.
Emdoneni
Pretty soon we arrived at Emdoneni where we joined the tour there, learning about the African Wild Cat’s, Servals, Caracals and of course the stars of the show, the Cheetah!
Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
After Emdoneni we made a slight detour, visiting Zimimpilo for a bit of shopping (yup, 4 lovely ladies on tour… means we cannot skip any shopping opportunity!). Afterwards we headed to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, our base for the next 2 nights.
Our time in the park was fantastic, we spotted 4 of the Big 5 (Leopard being the shy one as per usual) as well as so much other game and bird life.
St.Lucia Estuary
All good things must come an end though, and pretty soon it was time to start making our way back to Durban. We did our usual detour to St.Lucia to join a 2 hour cruise along the estuary. Unfortunately I didn’t get the opportunity to go with (boat was full) but the report back from the girls was extremely positive, with rafts of Hippo spotted out the water, as well as a few crocodiles!
