I am usually pretty prepared. I have been accused (rightly so sometimes) of leaving things to the last minute. But usually I’m prepared on the day with everything I need for a tour. Except this time. Back to back tours (yes I have an excuse!) meant that I forgot something on our latest Durban Day Tour… batteries. So on our latest “Big 5 Safari Tour From Durban“, I had a camera but it was as useful as a paperweight this time around*.
Big 5 Safari Tour From Durban
I like an early start to our Durban day tours, leaving at 6:30am from Durban means we’re the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve at about 9:30am (including the much needed coffee/fuel break). My latest tour started off incredibly well with Zebra, Buffalo and Impala at at the main entry gate, Nyalazi.
Hluhluwe Imfolozi Big 5 Game Reserve
After I got us signed in, we parked at the entrance an enjoyed the sights of these animals just going about their business. The reactions on my guests faces in having these beautiful animals just meters away in the African veld is worth all the effort. We had to get going though, since we still had a full day and a big park ahead of us.
The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is some 960km2 and is the oldest proclaimed park in Africa. The game park is actually an amalgamation of two separate parks, the Hluhluwe Game Reserve and the Imfolozi Game Reserve. And on top of this, it’s also the biggest state owned Big-5 game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. Hard to imagine today, but over a 100,000 game animals were slaughtered in this park right up until the 40’s!
Our day to be honest was rich in animals sightings, but just too be out in the African landscape is a fantastic experience. One of my guests was telling me how her great-great-grandparents were from Africa, and for her the experience of just being in the park was enough.
Nile Crocodile at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
Our day wasn’t a complete loss, we spotted 4 of the Big 5, numerous antelope and plenty of bird life. There was a even a massive crocodile (biggest I’ve seen at this park) one of my guests spotted sunning himself on the bank of the Hluhluwe river; what a time to have no working camera!
After a very late afternoon lunch break (well, more a picnic I would say) we headed into the second half of the park, traveling into the northern, Hlluhluwe section. After a quiet start we were really fortunate to get some Rhino near the entrance before having to return to Durban.
