The last few weeks has kept me really busy with tours headed out to the Battlefields area of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as the Valley of 1000 Hills area (that’s where Tala Game Reserve, PheZulu Safari Park and Isithumba are), and of course, quite a few Big 5 Game Reserve Tour’s.
Big 5 Game Reserve Tour
It may be a bit of an early start, but whether just it’s just for a day tour, or even perhaps an overnight tour, the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is on of the best parks to view the Big 5. The park istelf is a 2,5 hour drive from Durban, but at 960km2 is big enough to get lost in and just absorb South Africa at it’s best.
On our most recent tour we were so fortunate to come across a recent kill by Lion. The poor old Wildebeest (Gnu) was lying within inches of the road, and the Lions themselves were resting in the shade some 3 or 4 meters away. Just fantastic!
The park today is made of of two parks, the Hluhluwe (northern) section and the Imfolozi (southern) section. We usually make a beeline straight for the Imfolozi section when leaving Durban, the views of the park are spectacular, and withing a very short while you can definitely feel you’re lost in the bush!
In the late afternoons I like to drive through the Hluhluwe section as well, usually there’s loads of Bufallo, Giraffe and Nyala as well as Elephant!
Hippo and Crocodile
We were also pretty fortunate that we spotted 2 Hippo in the Hluhluwe River (more accurately, just their nostrils but still…) as well as 3 Crocodile basking in the sun, jaws open to help regulate their temperatures. It was quite interesting to watch a large group of Buffalo keeping a wary eye on the Crocodile as they took advantage of the cool water.
Of course being that the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is not a zoo, sightings are not guaranteed, but I think that makes it all the more worthwhile because it means you have to put a bit of work in to find the animals, but when you do, it’s all the more rewarding!
The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Big 5 Game Reserve Day Tour departs Durban at 6:30am everyday of the week. We collect from your hotel of B&B anywhere in the Durban or surrounding areas. All entry fees are included in the tour as well as a light lunch. We return to Durban at approximately 6:30pm the same day.
