The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is just 2,5 hours from Durban and is a fantastic place to enjoy a safari when visiting Durban. On Wednesday last week I collected 4 clients from their Durban beachfront hotel for a Big 5 Durban Safari Day Tour.

Big 5 Durban Safari Day Tour

I like to get an early start to our Hluhluwe Imfolozi Big 5 day tours so arranged with my clients from France to pick them up from their hotel on the Durban beachfront. The weather was fantastic for the day ahead with beautiful blue skies forecast. The weather is one of Durban’s greatest  strengths, it’s sunny and beautiful all year round making tours from Durban great regardless of when visiting.

The History of KwaZulu-Natal and Durban

To help pass the time on the drive to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, I chatted about the history of South Africa, Durban and the Zulu people. And for my French guests, the history of the Zulus and French is particularly interesting as it was during the Anglo Zulu War that the Prince Imperial was killed by Zulu warriors! Yup, you’ll learn all manner of interesting facts on our day tours.

We arrived at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve at 9:30am after stopping for coffee along the way and right away, were lucky to view 3 bull Elephants at the entrance gate to the park. This was great as my guests were able to get some really fantastic pictures while I completed the paperwork at the gate.

Giraffe at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve

The rest of our morning in the park proved to be great, with a journey of Giraffe being spotted right next to the road, and loads of Impala resting in the shade of the acacia trees. We also got to see two White Rhino crossing the road right in front of us!

As we carried on, a passing vehicle told us of a Lion sighting further in the park, and although it wasn’t really a part of the park I had planned to go, I wanted to try and get the Lion sighting for my clients who had never seen Lion outside of a zoo before.

It took us nearly two hours, but finally in the vicinity of where the Lion were spotted, we came across a lioness lieing right in the middle of the road! We were also incredibly lucky to have the sighting to ourselves for about 15 min before another vehicle came by and the Lioness moved into the bush and joined a male, before the two disappeared from sight.

Wildebeest at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve

We stopped for a picnic lunch along the Imfolozi River before making our way to the northern section of the park for our afternoon game drive. It was pretty quiet to start off with, we didn’t see very many animals for about an hour, but then all of a sudden they seemed to be everywhere!

Our day finished off with great sightings of Rhino, Impala, Wildebeest and even some Waterbuck. My personal favorite of the day was a large Nile crocodile being investigated by two hippo near a picnic site in the northern part of the park. We also got to see Nyala, Monitor Lizard, Warthog and many more animals.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end so we left the park at 4:30pm and headed back to Durban, all the while chatting about what we had seen. A fantastic day tour!
