I was quite dumb struck on reading in the newspaper that the author Azziz Hassim had passed away a few days ago (Friday, 14 June 2013).
I read Hassim’s book “The Lotus People” not that long ago and was really captivated by his descriptions of Durban and her people during the apartheid years. I’ve still got the book here somewhere, so I think I’ll re-read it… kind of my own personal memorial to him.
“The Lotus People” follows the journey of an Indian family to Durban, and tells of the struggles of the Indian people during the years of apartheid. It’s worth reading simple because we have a large Indian population in Durban, and they quite simply created Grey Street. No history of Durban would be complete without their voice.
