Visitors to Durban are usually aware of the Zulu people that call Durban, and of course KwaZulu-Natal their home. Most visitors though don’t know much about the Zulu people and so we prepared a day tour to a local village called iSithumba in the Valley of 1000 Hills, some 30 minutes west of Durban.
Day Tour to the Zulu village of iSithumba
Visitors are really curious about the Zulu people they see portrayed in the film Zulu and Zulu Dawn. Of course on arrival at Durban they see the modern Zulu going about their daily lives. Nearby where I live in the Valley of 1000 Hills is a village called iSithumba that I thought visitors would like to visit as it shows the life that the majority of Zulu people still lead.

The Mgeni RIver is still today used by a number of local Zulu people to wash clothes, gather water from, and of course fish and play in.
Mgeni River
Life in this Zulu village still revolves around the river. Children take to the river to play after school and the young girls of the family fetch water from the river for the day ahead. Clothes are still washed in the river and the river is still the first step in courtship for the Zulu people.
Visiting the Sangoma, Sub-Chief and a Home Visit
Our tour to the village includes a visit to the Sangoma, a sort of traditional spiritual Zulu healer. Many of these rural villages still have a chief or sub-chief in place and so if he’s home, we’ll visit him as well. Of course visiting the river is a must as it is still so imporatant to Zulu tradition.
