A visit to the bustling city of Durban can never be complete without a visit to one of KwaZulu-Natal’s best attractions, the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. Situated just 2,5 hours north of Durban, the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is Africa’s oldest proclaimed game park and it’s 960km2 of bush veld just teems with life. This was our destination for our most recent Durban safari day tour.
A Day Tour to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
I collected my guests nice and early (6:30am) from their hotel in uMhlanga just outside the city of Durban and we headed northwards. The drive is long, so to help move time along a bit I chatted to both Michael and Sarah about the history of Durban, the Zulu people as well as pointed out the various sites along the way.
Elephant in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
Our first sighting of the day when entering the game park was of bull Elephants who were enjoying a muddy wallow. There’s a wonderful story about 4 of the original Elephants transferred from Kruger National Park to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve and how they misbehaved without the tempering influence of female elephants (learn about that when you book a tour with us!).
Fantastic Sightings of the Big 5
The rest of our day was just absolutely crazy with the amount of luck we had. We spotted the Big 5 all before lunch time, and after lunch came across a pack of about 8 African Painted Wild Dog! In all my many years of guiding, I can’t say I’ve had this much luck in just one day. Our tick list just grew longer and longer as the day went by.
Of course everyone’s holy grail of wildlife spotting has to be sightings of the elusive Leopard. Because Leopards are solitary and sparse, sightings of them tend to be rare. We were so fortunate to have spotted Leopard crossing the road at the very end of our day that really just made this day tour one to remember for everyone!
For me the favorites had to be the Wild Dog, a lone Buffalo that refused to move out the road and forced me into the bush to go around it, a particularly playful Baboon that was fascinated by our presence and a gorgeous Leopard that crossed the road in a flash in front of us.
