Recently we wrote a blog post on how to spend 3 days in Durban. This post was so popular that we got quite a few emails asking us for more itinerary proposals. More than a few of those emails asked us advice on what to do if a visitor had 5 days in Durban – well, challenge accepted!
Our 5 day Durban itinerary is designed to get a little of everything, so we’ve included a wildlife experience, a Zulu cultural experience and a little adventure. Of course this is just our idea of fun, you may want something a little different so feel free to get in touch and we’ll design an itinerary to suit you. But onward now to our suggestions
The short version of our 5 day itinerary
The Long Version of our suggested 5 day Durban itinerary
Day 1 – A Durban City Tour
If you’ve come all the way to Durban, it would be shame if you didn’t explore a little bit. On our Durban City Day tour will visit all the usual tourist hot spots plus a few others. One of the highlights of this tour is visiting the Warwick Market where you’ll get to learn more about the early history of Durban as well as the Indian and Zulu traditions and culture. We also walk through the largest outdoor pharmacy in South Africa. As a special treat we’ll be stopping for a “bunny chow” which is Durban’s gift to the culinary world. Also included is a tour of the oldest surviving botanical gardens in Africa.
Day 2 – iSithumba Zulu Township and Village Tour
The Zulu people make up the largest indigenous group in South Africa and their history is not only fascinating but is incredibly important in regards to the history of South Africa. From the arrival of the 1824 settlers to the Anglo Zulu war and of course the politics of today, the Zulu people and their history is worth exploring. But, it’s more than just history. The townships created before and during apartheid are still operating today and you’ll get an opportunity to learn and experience the challenges faced today by many Zulu people. On our iSithumba Township Tour you’ll get experience a walk through the township with a local guide.
Day 3 – Overnight Safari Tour to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
The next two days are going to be pretty exciting. You’ll leave Durban at 7am and head on a 3 hour drive north of Durban into the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. This reserve, the oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa, is considered to be the best in KwaZulu-Natal and one of the top 3 in South Africa. The reserve is home to the Big 5, and at 960k2 is large enough to keep you busy for the next 2 days. There’s an option to enjoy a late afternoon game drive in an open safari vehicle as well. Accommodation is in the park and dinner and breakfast included. And throughout your time in the park you’ll have your own private safari guide!
Day 4 – Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve and St Lucia Estuary
On the 2nd day of your Hluhluwe Imfolozi overnight safari tour you’ll start off with an early morning game drive before breakfast and then checkout. Then it’s an short 60 min drive to St Lucia where you’ll get to enjoy an amazing 2 hour cruise on the St Lucia estuary, famed for the Hippo that stroll through the town. There’s also Crocodile and plenty of bird life. After a lunch you’ll head back into Durban.
Day 5 – Swim with Sharks or Zipline through a Canopy Forest
On the last day of your itinerary you have an option of either swimming with sharks or ziplining with a canopy forest.
Just 45 min south of Durban lies Aliwal Shoal, known to a be a shark hot spot. After a safety briefing and getting kitted out in a wet suit, you’ll get taken out into the Indian Ocean and with your instructors get to jump into the ocean and swim with sharks. This amazing experience has to be tried to be believed – oh and now fatalities, human of shark, have been recorded since the diving began. After a few hours out at sea you’ll come on back for a light lunch before heading back to Durban.
The alternative is a Zipline tour through the Karkloof forest canopy about 2 hours west of Durban. Here you’ll get strapped in a harness and hooked up to a network of ziplines that crisscross above the Karkloof canopy. Along the way your guides that accompany you will be telling you about the forest, pointing out birds and trees. After this you’ll have lunch before heading to the Nelson Mandela Capture site for a short but informative tour and then you’ll head on back to Durban.
