Birding in Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Game Reserve

I don’t often get “birders” booking trips with me but recently I had a fantastic guest who wasn’t just interested in only seeing the “big-5”, but who also wanted to see some birdlife.

After a morning pick up from Durban, we were in the Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Game Reserve by lunchtime and with camera’s and binocular’s at the ready (as well as my aging Sasol “Birds of Southern Africa” guide) we got stuck in.

  • Natal Francolin
  • Red-Chested Cuckoo
  • Narina Trogon
  • Malachite Kingfisher
  • Trumpeter Hornbill
  • African Hoopoe
  • Crested Barbet
  • Lesser Stripped Swallow
  • European Barn Swallow
  • Drongo
  • Pied Crow
  • Blackeyed (common) Bulbul
  • Natal Robin
  • African Pied Wagtail
  • Glossy Starling
  • Redwinged Starling
  • Redbilled Ocpecked
  • Yellow Weaver
  • Southern Masked Weaver
  • Southern Red Bishop
  • Pintail Whydah
  • Hadeda Ibis (my¬†favorite!)

Animals seen…

  • A 40-strong “parade (or herd)” of Elephant
  • Buffalo (loads)
  • Zebra
  • Waterbuck (twice!)
  • Nyala (mostly females but one male seen hiding out)
  • Giraffe
  • White Rhino
  • Warthog
  • and of course Impala
  • Hippo (St.Lucia)
  • Crocodile (St.Lucia)
  • Tortoise (one hit by a car – please drive carefully in the park!!!)

After leaving the Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Park we made our way the St.Lucia estuary where we boarded a river boat. The birding carried on there as well…

  • Giant Kingfisher

All in all a successful African Safari I thought!
