Big 5 Safari Tours to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve

The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa and is home to the Big 5 as well as many other animals on it’s sprawling 960km2. The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, just a 2,5 hour drive north of Durban, is probably best known for it’s previous head ranger, Dr Ian Player who in the 70’s started Operation Crash and successfully saved a then fast diminishing White Rhino population.

Big 5 Safari Tours to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve

In the last few months we’ve been so fortunate to be busy and have taken many international guests to experience the park. Sometimes we South Africans forget just how blessed we are to live in South Africa and have the opportunity to visit our game parks when ever the mood strikes!

For visiting tourists, this is often a once in a lifetime event and so we always strive to ensure our clients have the best possible experience. This of course does bring in an interesting problem in that the animals are not caged, they roam free, so how do we as tour guides ensure visitors have a positive experience being that most want to see the Big 5?

Spitting Bugs and Dung Beetles

There is so much nmore than just the Big 5 to see at a game reserve. The trees themselves can be fascinating (think spitting bugs and Boer Bean trees). The humble Dung Beetle can also be fascinating (they navigate using the Milky Way!) and of course the bird life is spectacular.

Many also aren’t aware the the Zulu people themselves can trace their heritage back to a small tribe that lived on the banks of the white Imfolozi, and even today we can still see the evidence of the great hunting pits King Shaka created as well as the places where the great chief Mtubatuba forged the steelwork for the “iklwa”.
