4 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Imfolozi Big 5 Game Reserve and St Lucia

It’s really great that more and more travelers are exploring destinations like Durban that are probably not as well known as others in South Africa. I recently had a group of students from Canada who booked a 4 day safari tour to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve as well as St Lucia. From their comments at the end (and during) the tour they had a great time and could even one day return again with their families.

Day 1 – Durban to Emdoneni and Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve

I collected my guests from their accommodation in Durban and we started on the drive to Emdoneni. This was one of the sites that my guests actually requested. It is about 3 hours north of Durban so we all passed the time by chatting about the sites we saw along the way to Emdoneni and I told them about the history of Durban and the Zulu people.

When we got to Emdoneni, my guests were taken through to the facility and given a tour of the project. Here at Emdoneni, four of the eight African cats are focused on, the Cheetah, Caracal, Serval and African Wild Cat. The project looks after sick and injured cats and releases then when they are ready to head back into the wild.

The project also breeds the cats and releases then as soon as they are able into available reserves around the country. This project is important, if only to introduce both local people and international travelers to the importance of these fantastic cats and their role in conservation in South Africa.

After Emdoneni we headed into the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. This is KwaZulu-Natal’s biggest Big 5 reserve and is my favorite. We stopped for lunch at Hilltop camp, checked in and then enjoyed a great afternoon game drive spotting many species of animals.

Day 2 – Hilltop Camp, Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve

Most of the group started off the second day with a game drive in an open safari vehicle at 6am. We all met for breakfast and it turns out everyone had spotted Lion! We decided to head to the southern section of the park specifically to look for Giraffe.

It was a long day in the south. We left Hilltop at 10am and didn’t’ return until five-thirty! It took the whole day, but we spotted Giraffe, Wildebeest, Waterbuck, Elephant, Impala… the list just goes on and on. And that’s not even mentioning the amazing bird life as well!

Day 3 – Bayete Zulu Elephant Experience

It was time to leave Hilltop Camp and the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve for our next destination, St Lucia. On the way we visited Bayete Zulu for the Elephant Interaction.

At the Bayete Reserve we got introduced to the three Elephant that come in at 11am every day for a treat of horse feed and human interaction. Rachel, Rambo and Jabulani are the Elephants names. My guests got to learn so much about the Elephant and at the same time, even got to feed them treats!

After Bayete we stopped for some curio shopping before heading into the holiday town of St Lucia which is situated in the UNESCO World Heritage site, iSimangaliso. After dinner we even did a little star gazing which is always a hit as there are just some constellations and stars that can only be seen in the Southern Hemisphere.

Day 4 – St Lucia, A Cruise, The Beach and a Braai

This was our final day on our 4 day safari tour. The group started off with a 2 hour cruise of the St Lucia estuary where they got too see loads of Hippo’s as well as crocodiles. The highlight had to be the dead Hippo that the Crocodile were feeding off of!

After this we decided to enjoy a traditional “braai” (barbecue) on the beach in honor of Canada Day (the group were Canadian after all). I have to say that initially I think everyone was a little skeptical of my barbecuing abilities, but afterwards I think I earned their respect (at least no one went hungry!).

Finally is was time to return to Durban. Everyone slept on the way back which is not surprising since there were a couple of late nights and early starts along the way.
